My name is Ella and this website is a part of my Girl Scout Gold Award project
My goal is to get kids and their families hiking in Colorado's amazing National Parks and local trails in all seasons.
Welcome to Family Colorado Hiking
The Why
I was reading an article about children not going outside enough and the article stated that children under the age of 15 spend approximately 4-7 minutes a day outside. I remember going outside as a kid. There were woods behind my house and I would play with my friends and sister for hours. The fresh air pomade all of us feel better So, for my Gold Award project, I wanted to create an opportunity for kids to enjoy going outside and reap the benefits of spending time in nature. What better way than to create a family hiking website with rewards for completion? As a Girl Scout, the Gold Award project is the highest award that a Girl Scout can earn.
The How
Survey- I made a survey about the types of hikes kids would be interested in, how long they would be willing to hike, and what is stopping them from going on more hikes. I also created a parent survey that asked why they thought their kids were not going on more hikes. Around thirty responses were received half by form and half by verbal responses Based on the response, I decided to put in shorter hikes. Most responses were one to two miles while the next largest was 2-3 miles with one person wanting more than six miles.
Hikes- I searched through books about Colorado's best hikes and the All Trails website and choose hikes based on the answers in my survey. I wanted to pick around 30 hike options so I would not overwhelm people.
Reward- I wanted kids to earn something for going on hikes, If they complete 5 hikes, they can earn a sticker. If they are a Girl Scout, there are badge requirements for them to earn a patch. I also included a checklist you can accomplish when you are outside hiking.
